Promote Student Agency With Choice Boards
Student empowerment is one of the main focuses in teaching and learning. Teachers want students to be intrinsically motivated in their learning journey so that they are not driven by marks and grades. Choice Boards are a great tool for students to practice agency as they are given a list of activities that they need to complete to show their understanding in a given concept.
WHAT ARE CHOICE BOARDS?
Choice Boards are interactive Google Slides or Google Docs that are hyperlinked and provide a simple overview to students of what they are expected to complete. It can be directed to a standard, goal or competency that is related to the Ministry of Education’s expectations, or it can also act as a smorgasbord of activities that students can choose from.
Choice Boards promote the students’ ability to have choice in designing their learning experience guided by the set success criteria and learning goals of the lesson.
This choice board shows a progression that will help provide a path to student success. The Google Slides templates are set up with internal links, with the first slide acting as a main page for content, and each link takes students to another slide within the same slideshow. Those extra slides are great for adding directions or more information about the task at hand. The slides are also colour-coded to traffic light colours to indicate competency:
red for approaching the ministry expectation
yellow for meeting the ministry expectation and
green for exceeding the ministry expectation.
