Flipping the classroom with Edpuzzle
In science, videos are a fantastic tool to activate students’ curiosity. They are also great at scaffolding concepts that may be difficult to visualize, for example, the mole. Videos are often the tool teachers use when flipping the classroom - have the students complete a set of work at home before class and come to class with the assumed retained knowledge from the video. Since the creation of YouTube, teachers have been able to enrich the classroom experience with videos; however, it’s difficult to measure students’ understanding of the video content. Edpuzzle solves that problem.
WHAT IS EDPUZZLE?
Edpuzzle is a video editing tool that allows teachers to choose any video or upload their own, and embed their own assessment questions, to track their students’ progress.
As an educational tool, Edpuzzle has populated their own platform with educational videos from credible academic sources such as:
This provides a great selection of premade content so teachers don’t need to download and upload videos on their own.
Edpuzzle formatively assesses students’ understanding of the video content and provide students’ results in a gradebook that teachers can easily export and download as a .csv file.
SET UP
Getting started with Edpuzzle is very easy, especially if the classes are set up on Google Classroom.
Teachers can Add a New Class by manually creating a class and inviting students using a unique code or import a class from Google Classroom.
Teachers can Add a New Class by manually creating a class and inviting students using a unique code or import a class from Google Classroom.
Once the class is set up, teachers can browse for videos under the Content tab. If the school organization is registered, then teachers can view content that is created by teachers from the same school under the Content tab.
Click on a video and select Edit on the bottom right
There are three different choices to edit the video:
Multiple Choice question
Open-Ended question
Notes
Once the questions are embedded into the video, select Assign on the bottom right
Select the class that the video should be assigned to, and that’s it!
There are many options to assign a video, it can be done as an assignment where students complete the task individually or can be done as a Live Assignment where students complete it as a group with the teacher projecting the video simultaneously.
I have yet to see another video editing tool that is similar to Edpuzzle, which makes Edpuzzle a powerful and niche product. Edpuzzle has been a great way to start my lessons in addition to Kahoot quizzes. It has also been a great way to flip my classroom by assigning videos for students to watch before the next lesson. With the Google Classroom integration, students’ names and progress are stored so that the teacher is provided with a more clear overview of students’ work completion and whether or not they have all collectively struggled with a particular concept.
